Thru time travel I have been able to find an article that I will write in the year 2059 describing the evolution of the artists’ working conditions and the co-operation with the bureacracy during the century since 1959. It all started with an interview with Lenny Bruce that year which later on started that explosive development in the arts.
and here is my letter from the future:
Message from april 1st, 2059: Looking back on the economics of the arts world during the last 100 years.
Lenny Bruce’s comments in 1959, exactly 100 years ago, about the secretaries and their bad effect on the arts was the first sign of what was later to be the great movement on reconstruction of the role of those whose work it is to make the art world and the artists in it function as smoothly as possible.
Even 50 years ago, this restructuring was not felt in the cultural climate of the time. Indeed, even though in Sweden a thorough cultural investigation was made in 2009, it only treated the working conditions and mechanics of the people whose call was to serve the artists. The cultural investigation did not deal with the arts at all, not even with the working conditions of the artists or the content of their work. All it covered were the rules of distribution of support among those distributing it. It sounds unbelievable to a modern ear, but that’s how it was as late as in the beginning of this century..
It was not until ten years later, in 2019, that the view on the relationship between artists and bureaucrats that seem so natural to us today got the upper hand in peoples minds. And of course, as soon as the people involved, bureaucrats and artists alike, realised that this was the way to do things, things evolved very quickly and within a few years everybody was happily doing what suited them best and what they liked the most. That is, for the artist: creating art and for the bureaucrats: constructing and filling out forms and raising money for the betterment of the arts and the citiziens. And what a glorious cultural life we all got at last.

Tidsoptimistiskt var det att tro att det uppvaknandet skedde redan 2019, det var ju inte förrän i mitten av tjugotalet som förändringarna satte fart.
Addendum in Swedish:
Jag har ju tidigare delat brevet från år 2059 om den lyckliga framtiden där kulturutövare och kulturadministratörer i lycklig symbios sett till att vår befolkning kan uppleva god och nyttig kultur i bästa sämja till allas båtnad. Vad som då inte kom med var det relativt smärtsamma uppvaknandet för alla inom verksamhetsområdet som föranleddes av den politiska turbulensen i slutet av 2020-talet som ju krävde sina offer. Jag kan här förmedla en efterlämnad dagboksanteckning från en anställd inom kulturadministrationen som sorgligt nog kom att avsluta sitt liv i slutet av maj året efter att ha skrivit detta. Låt oss inte glömma utan fälla en tår och hedra de offer som krävts på vägen till det goda samhället.
“Klockan är fyra. Kan inte sova. Sitter på balkongen. Det nya direktivet! Det kom på Lucia och ansökan skall vara inne den femtonde januari. Om en månad och en dag. Klockan 15. Efter att det nya arbetsåret redan inletts. Måste alltså göras under helgerna. Tur i oturen att jag är noggrann med almanackan och sparat i tre år även om den är lite tunnare ifylld än jag önskat. Besked kommer under maj månad. Och en referensgrupp ska de ha med Lina, Dror, Niklas och Boonstra i täten för ett koppel av, jag citerar, ”konstnärligt verksamma inom alla områden”.
Och hur är det tänkt med lönen fram till beslutet? Ansökan får inte skrivas på arbetstid. Får man inga pengar förrän ansökan beviljats? Eller skall lönen fram till dess betalas tillbaka om ansökan avslås? Och då? Sparken? Lönens storlek skall man också äska men storleken påverkas av hur man presterat under de tre sista åren och hur väl man formulerat vad man vill åstadkomma framöver så där gäller det att hålla tungan rätt i mun och satsa rätt.
Men är det verkligen rimligt att kräva redovisning av ens eget konstnärliga intag som de kallar det. Jag skall alltså redovisa läst skönlitteratur, besökta muséer, teaterföreställningar, performances och konserter, i landet och internationellt, i jobbet och privat. Och jobbigast av allt: ”Redovisa eget konstnärligt uttryck på fritiden, genre, tidsåtgång, sammanhang. Skatta efter bästa förmåga den egna kvalitén. Bifoga eventuella referenser.” Oavsett vilken konstnärlig uttrycksform man arbetar med!
