“If you are a connoisseur of Indian music there would be a gaping hole in your library without this disc” – Raul da Gama
Raag Chandrakauns in a recording from a private concert
in Stockholm 1969 with two of the real giants of Hindustani music, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar on rudra veena (been) and Pandit Taranath on pakhawaj.
I invited them to stop by in Stockholm on the way back to India
In the spring of 1969 Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Pandit Taranath Rama Rao were returning from their first teaching trip to U.S. Z. M. Dagar had been at Wesleyan and Taranathji at Ravi Shankar’s school in L.A. if I remember right. Since I was learning from Taranathji and had stayed in the same house as Dagarsaheb in Chembur I invited them to stop by in Stockholm on the way back to India and managed to secure a few playing occasions for Swedish Radio and TV as well as a couple of concerts. One of them was a private concert in the atelier of the late Swedish painter Axel Törneman in Stockholm. The sound from the private concert is quite good and the music is of course wonderful so, we are happy to offer you their Raag Chandrakauns from this evening. – Bengt Berger
Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, rudra veena
Pandit Taranath, pakhawaj
Bengt Berger, tanpura
I’m sorry to say…
there is a technical error on our Zia Mohiuddin Dagar-Pandit Taranath album. In between the tracks there is a pause of second or two, the parts of the piece are supposed to sound without interruption. Feel comforted by the fact that when it’s not silent, that is 99+% of the time, the music is awesome.

Reviews
Raul da Gamas review of Chandrakauns. Read his all at World Music Report
RootsWorld has a great and insightful review of the Chandrakauns raag rendered at Live in Stockholm 1969 written by Warren Senders: “Dagarsaheb’s entire musical career served as a refutation to those who confuse musical accomplishment with mere virtuosity, for he could convey more in one note than most other musicians could in a year’s worth of dazzling pyrotechnics……Enjoy this exquisite hour of music from one of the greatest masters of adagio the world has ever known.” You find his review HERE.
Francis Gooding in The Wire, April 2016: “The raag here is unfolded here with profound and unhurried grace, and Dagar stretches whorls of overtone from held notes until each seems to contain a complete composition.”
Maria Lord in Songlines, January 2016: “Listening from beginning to end unveils an inexorable internal logic culminating in the powerful entry of the pakhawaj at the start of the composition proper – the gat section in “Raga Chandrakauns”.
Some reviews in Swedish, in Tidningen Kulturen, and in SoundofMusic.
