Bhairavi
Zia Mohiuddin Dagar
“Another rare sitar recording found”
From a private concert in 1965
Quite some years ago we made a very appreciated album with the famous beenkar Ustad Zia Mohiuddin where he played Mishra Bhairavi on sitar, a very rare thing. I recently found one more, this one played as the conclusion of the long private concert in Chembur on January 19, 1968. That concert were held by the Junior Dagar Brothers and Ravi Bellare and is issued on three albums during 2023. So on November 10, 2023 this half hourlong version will be available for you. The drawing on the cover is done by Selene Fung, unfortunately I have not been able to locate her but if you see this Selene, please contact me.
More info
The Dagar family are the keepers of the oldest of the North Indian (Hindustani) classical traditions, Dhrupad. Ustad’s father Ziauddin Dagar was the court musician in Udaipur. Other lineages of the family were at the service of other courts for many generations. In 1968 Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar (1929-1990) did his first recording on his giant been, the rudra veena that he had designed but up to that point he mainly played the sitar. Here he is accompanied by K. Sridhar on tanpura.
